Gallery-9 will showcase the art of Sandra Smith-Poling and jewelry from Judith Komishane this month.
Smith-Poling is a founding member of Gallery-9 in Port Townsend, and has been painting for more than 40 years.
Her father, renowned Southern California painter Craig Smith, was her strongest influence, along with Arthur Beaumont, Sir William Russel Flint, and John Singer Sargent.
Her command of watercolor is a joy of light, color and detail, and is her passion. She also works in oils and pen and ink. Smith-Poling is influenced by the English school of watercolor and strives to obtain the maximum effect with the first stroke of the brush, capturing what the eye and mind see and feel in a scene. This technique gives freshness to her paintings, and her palette is a balance of permanent, transparent, opaque, and dye colors.
She paints everything from picturesque city landscapes to nature, especially those of the marine environments, along with boats and classic sailing ships. Twenty years in the Air Force with global deployments have provided excellent painting subjects. Komishane has been making jewelry for more than 15 years, combing through antique shops among other places in her travels to find a wide variety of materials for her necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.
“I began beading to keep my husband company while he watched baseball games and haven’t stopped,” she said.
Komishane loves finding new ways to combine materials so each piece is unique.
“I strive to make a wide variety of styles, colors, and price ranges to suit different people. I like variety,” Komishane noted. “I love that my jewelry finds homes in many different places. One necklace went to a New York theater producer’s niece, one to a gallery owner for herself, and another went with its owner to a meeting with Hillary Clinton.”
“I especially like making custom pieces,” she added.
Gallery-9 is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday.
Masks are required. Visit the gallery’s website at www.gallery-9.com.
