No one hurt in house fire on the Toandos Peninsula

An early morning fire Monday destroyed a home and a fifth wheel trailer on Sea Home Road on the Toandos Peninsula.

Quilcene Fire Chief Tim McKern said the two residents escaped the blaze without injury.

Quilcene firefighters were called to the fire just after 7 a.m. Oct. 18.

“It was fully involved by the time we got there,” McKern said.

The resident told emergency responders the fire started in a back bedroom.

“He basically got out of there with his pants, a shoe, and a dog. And keys for his van.”

The other resident, who lived in the fifth wheel, also escaped harm.

Firefighters from Quilcene, Coyle, Brinnon, East Jefferson, and Port Ludlow responded. Multiple engines and water tenders were brought to the scene.

Emergency crews had the blaze under control within an hour, McKern said.

The cause of the fire is not currently known and remains under investigation. The fire was in the 500 block of Sea Home Road, off of Thorndyke Road.

The property was insured, and the property owner in California has already been notified of the fire.

“The home is a total loss and the fifth wheel is a total loss,” McKern said.

A shed on the property was saved with minimal damage, the chief said.

The resident was grateful for that, McKern said, because he had tools inside.

There was also an impressive amount of community support after the fire.

“He said the help from the community has been amazing,” McKern said.

“By the end of the day Monday, somebody had brought a trailer to them to move back into.”

There were also donations of food and clothing.

The Red Cross has provided assistance, as well, McKern said.
