I volunteered as an elections observer during this past primary, and wow, was I impressed.
Having no idea about what happens with our ballots once we slide them into the dropbox behind the Courthouse, I can now say without a doubt that we, in Jefferson County, are in very good hands, when it comes to the counting of our votes.
The Auditor’s Office staff were focused, meticulous, and followed the rules to the letter. The controls in place (e.g. always a minimum of two staff present in any part of the ballot-counting process, working in “batches” and cross-checking numbers of ballots counted, getting two sets of eyes on anomalies) were an accountant’s dream: Perfection in motion, with everything able to be double-checked, confirmed and signed off with confidence.
Kudos to the staff, who we’ve entrusted to this work, and who take their jobs seriously. I left feeling zero doubt in the integrity of our ballot-counting system here in Jefferson County.
As an Elections Observer, I felt it important to share this with county citizens: our ballots are in excellent hands, and we, here, can trust the process.
