Night closures coming up for the Hood Canal Bridge

Posted

Repair work on the Hood Canal Bridge will shut down the span completely for three nights later this month.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is advising travelers to get ready for the total closures.

The bridge will be shut down from

11 p.m. Tuesday, May 18 to 4 a.m. Wednesday, May 19; 11 p.m. Wednesday, May 19 to 4 a.m. Thursday, May 20; and 11 p.m. Thursday, May 20 to 4 a.m. Friday, May 21.

Officials noted the bridge may open to travelers at unscheduled times if work allows.

The closures may be pushed back due to weather.

Permanent repairs are needed to a pair of twin metallic objects shaped like pyramids on one half of the bridge that help guide the span into dual receivers located on the second half of the bridge.

The objects, which are actually called "pyramids" by bridge workers, will be removed along with a large metal plate that keeps them in place. Crews will then reinstall the metal plate and the pyramids using industrial-sized bolts.
