New O’Yummy owners bring sweet treats, sweeter service

After purchasing O’Yummy Frozen Yogurt on Taylor Street back in late January, new owners Rosie and Thomas Olson have been busy serving sweet treats to eager eaters.

“Everything has been positive about this place, we like this shop and the happy customers,” Rosie Olson said. “I really enjoy this place and these people.”

Situated in the heart of downtown Port Townsend, the frozen yogurt shop boasts an expansive list of fro-yo flavors that change every week, 80-plus toppings to make a truly unique and sweet dessert, and great customer service.

The couple’s first big taste of the frozen dessert space as owners came during their grand re-opening back in mid-February, where they handed out free 10-ounce frozen yogurt treats to any who visited.

“We served over 500 people and had a good group of friends that came by to support us,” Thomas said. “We’ve had a lot of support from the community.”

Thomas helps out a lot, but O’Yummy’s captain at the helm is Rosie. She handles most responsibilities at the frozen yogurt shop like management, curation, day-to-day operations, and so on, while her husband assists the business when he isn’t handling responsibilities as Port Townsend’s chief of police.

As a full-time mom raising two kids — now 11 and 14 years old, Rosie wanted a new endeavor to put her energy into.

“My kids aren’t babies anymore … what about if we can own a shop?” she recalled thinking.

After the couple discussed the idea of buying one of the businesses in the Port Townsend area, Rosie considered O’Yummy as a possible option, and the rest is history.

She chose O’Yummy, “mostly for my little girl” she loves fro-yo,” Rosie said. “I like the colors and frozen yogurt, and my kids love it, too.”

The local support has been encouraging from other store owners downtown like The Wine Seller, La Cocina, Pizza Factory, and others welcoming Rosie to downtown.

“People are very kind, so kind. Maybe it’s because [we’re in] a small town, but people are so happy and supportive,” she said.

Folks looking to indulge their sweet tooth will have no problem finding a favorite fro-yo go-to.

“We have 45 different [frozen yogurt] flavors, and 80 different toppings. And we have fresh fruit, gummies, and four flavors of boba,” Thomas said.

The store also offers multiple choices for visitors wanting a tasty dessert that’s healthy, as well. O’Yummy has gluten-free, sugar-free, dairy-free, vegan, and other options sure to satisfy just about anyone.

So far, the top fro-yo flavor for kids has been cotton candy. Pistachio, along with sea salt and caramel, have been the favorite flavors for adults.

“We do have seasonal stuff, and we try to rotate and get good flavors in,” Thomas said.

With new ownership comes new possibilities, and the Olsons plan to keep O’Yummy open during the winter months — a major change from the previous owners who closed the business down during the cold season.

“For us, we know in the summer we’ll do well. What we’re trying to focus on is catering and working with the local community,” Thomas said.
