Minor injuries on ferry after hard landing

Posted

The ferry M/V Kennewick had a hard landing Saturday afternoon on the sailing from Coupeville, injuring several passengers and members of the crew.

The vessel was not damaged and the incident is under investigation, said WSF spokesman Ian Sterling.

Sterling said in an email the ferry “glanced off one of the offshore structures that help position the boat in the slip in PT at about 3 knots as it arrived from the 2:45 p.m. sailing out of Coupeville around 3:20 p.m. Saturday.”

Initial indications are that stronger-than-expected currents led to the incident, he added.

Injuries were minor, and an elderly woman was transported to the hospital as a precaution.

Sterling said the captain and crew of the Kennewick at the time of the landing were highly experienced.

The dock was not damaged in the incident, and the ferry went back into service by 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
