After an investigation by U.S. Park Rangers, Michael Pickering, 41, has been sentenced to 25 months in federal prison for more than 40 car break-ins in and around the Olympic and Mount Rainier National Parks.
The month-long spree began in March of last year. Pickering and his partner smashed car windows and stole thousands of dollars worth of equipment from vehicles parked at several national park trailheads.
Pickering was eventually caught when he used a victim’s credit card to make purchases.
Pickering stole electronics, car and house keys, diaries, clean clothes, makeup and toiletries. He used the debit and credit cards to buy thousands of dollars worth of goods including a flatscreen TV, gaming systems, a drone and clothes, according to an Olympic National Park press release.
“The victims in this case didn’t just suffer a financial loss, they were emotionally damaged as well,” said U.S. Attorney Brian Moran in the press release. “Some returned from what was supposed to be a relaxing time in nature, to find themselves stranded with a damaged vehicle, their electronics, clothes and money stolen, marooned in the national park, with no cell phone service. For some it has forever changed their interest in outdoor activities.”
After release from federal prison, Pickering will then serve three years of supervised release.
