A confrontation between two armed men early Wednesday morning at Sandy Shore Lake has left one man dead.

Detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office are investigating the incident, and the sheriff's office said the investigation so far indicates the shooting was in self-defense.

No one has been arrested in the case.

"The shooter was detained, questioned, and released at this time pending further investigation," the sheriff's office said in a post on social media Wednesday.

Public access to Sandy Shore Lake has been closed while the investigation continues.

Deputies were called to Sandy Shore Lake at 3:42 a.m. Wednesday.

The sheriff's office said both men had called to report the confrontation.

One of the men, reported to have confronted the shooter, was found dead with a firearm, authorities said.

The sheriff's office said the incident will remain under investigation "for the weeks and months to follow," according to a post by the sheriff's office on social media.

Staff from the Washington State Patrol crime lab were also at Sandy Shore Lake assisting in the investigation.

People with information on the incident have been asked to  contact Detective Derek Allen at dallen@co.jefferson.wa.us.
