I’ve saved this cold-weather photo from somewhere on the Internet for a number of years. It helps keep me in touch with things that really count during such periods of distress as the chaotic maelstrom that is Donald Trump.

The picture quietly speaks volumes about the scale of values in today’s world, a scale ranging from the true riches of the soul to the emptiness of the mere pursuit of wealth and power.

Some, in coming upon such a scene, consider it a blight on their own neat-and-comfortable life style. Others of us are concerned about whether both of those shown here were getting enough to eat . . . and what happened to them down the road.

“If I keep my character, I’ll be rich enough.”—Plotinus 204/5-270, one of antiquity’s most influential philosophers
