Judy Alexander, a community organizer and co-creator of the nonprofit Local 20/20, was named the 2022 Woman of Excellence by the American Association of University Women Port Townsend.

Alexander’s recent focus on providing emergency housing through the Community Build Project cemented the nominations and selection for this year’s recognition by AAUW Port Townsend.

The award, which recognizes women of Jefferson County who have contributed significantly to the community through paid or volunteer work, was announced during the AAUW’s annual holiday meeting, held virtually this year.

Alexander’s accomplishments as a role model, change agent, mentor, and community activist were key to her selection.

Since 1979, when she escaped to Port Townsend to distance herself from the urban noise of Seattle, Alexander has played a key role in the community.  Projects she’s been a part of over the years include the Port Townsend Peace Movement, Bay Saint Louis Sister City Project, Local 20/20, Neighborhood Preparedness, Community Gardens, and most recently the Community Build Project.

Annalee McConnell, one of the supporters of her nomination and a relative newcomer to Port Townsend, shared her praise at the award ceremony.

“Judy knows that a one-woman community action show can’t make a big enough difference,” McConnell said.

“She has a vision for how people can work together to make the sum far greater than its parts. Her leadership of the Community Build Project was a game changer because she reached out to a broad base of people with various skill levels, enabling them to contribute and feel valued.”
