The Seahawks and Chiefs lost, so let’s move on to some women’s college basketball. Last week, BJ and I went to see the University of Washington women play UCLA. Kelsey Plum is one fun player to watch because of the scoring prowess she demonstrates. She scored 39 points when we saw her play, and she scored 36 this past weekend against University of Arizona as well as 34 against Arizona State. Her teammate Chantel Osahor is a force of a different kind with her unusual shooting form (flat-footed) as well as her rebounding skill. Frankly, the whole team is a kick to watch. Since I am on the subject of women’s basketball, there is a senior at Mercer Island High School being scouted by the coach from Dartmouth. Dartmouth has a historical relationship with my alma mater, Wabash College, starting with its first faculty member being a graduate of Dartmouth. I also note that the player’s name is Anna Luce. With those skills, name and connections, I forecast a stellar career for Anna.

The annual Chili Potluck Dinner at The Beach Club is this coming weekend. It typically draws from 6 to 10 entries vying for favor from the crowd doing the tasting. Those 6-10 entries also typically vie for the prize of top “whiner” as they question the legitimacy of chicken chili or vegetarian chili as entries. Nonetheless, it is always a fun event and will generally provide an involuntary opportunity to savor some of the flavors and scents through the next day. Next month brings back those adorable women strangely referring to themselves as “The Adorables.” They are to perform at the next monthly Beach Club potluck on Feb. 11. Their performance this year marks at least the fifth edition under the able direction of Nancy Bonderson. It is advertised to be even better than the past. (As if that were even possible.)

TAX HELP

You probably have all your financial records from 2016 ready to take to the free AARP Tax-Aide service, which starts on Feb. 1. Tax-Aide volunteers will be available each week on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Port Townsend Community Center (385-9076); and Mondays from 3 to 7 p.m. or Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tri-Area Community Center (732-4822). The service is also available in Quilcene from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the community center on Feb. 25, March 16 and April 8. You can make an appointment there at 765-3321.

Port Ludlow Performing Arts continues to bring interesting programs to town. The next one is “The Enchanted Tail,” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26 in the Bay Club. The program is an opportunity to bring your children or, more likely, grandchildren to see this joyful musical story. It is full of fun and interactive songs telling the story of a mischievous fox and an enchanted princess. Victoria Robertson, as the princess, and Bernardo Bermudez, as the fox, bring the characters to life and encourage all the children to participate in the adventure.
