LETTER: Time to comment on Growlers

As we grit our teeth watching the drama unfold nationally, let’s not forget local issues before us.

One that has the capacity to affect our quality of life in Port Townsend and surrounding areas is the expansion of Growler jet training flights on Whidbey Island.

The Navy has extended the public comment deadline for their draft environmental impact statement [EIS] on the topic to Feb. 24. Check out an excellent source of information about the issues at

citizensofebeysreserve.com.

My response to the EIS centered mainly on the noise pollution impacts to health and safety, tourist economy, recreation, loss of property value, and questions about aquatic and terrestrial habitats. The consideration of other locations for jet training that are less environmentally sensitive and populated seems like a major omission in the EIS.
