LETTER: Quimper Mercantile is no Walmart

Regarding the references by a few merchants to Quimper Mercantile Company (QMC) as the local Walmart. Really? As a proud owner of 10 shares who has attended meetings all along the way of creating this locally owned business, I have to say the Walmart comment is insulting and actually ridiculous.

QMC has tried from the beginning to avoid harm or conflicts to other local businesses. It may have made mistakes as any business or person does, but the intentions have been honorable and honest. QMC always said they would not be another Swain’s, but nonetheless many locals were and are disheartened that it is not.

The demographics of Port Townsend have changed since Sport Townsend opened. Geezers don’t buy so much backpacking and sports gear. Young people are not as outdoorsy as the boomer generation. The internet happened. There are many reasons businesses fail in a radically changing world.

The last thing we should do in our small corner of it is blame each other.
