Letter: It’s time for Mueller to clean up Team Trump

What President Trump failed to mention in his election language about “cleaning the swamp” in Washington was that he was bringing the swamp with him. Special Investigator Robert Mueller’s team already has indicted five members of Team Trump, and they will serve prison time for their crimes. Trump’s own White House cleaning is itself record-setting; turnover of senior White House staff is more than 60 percent, according to the Brookings Institute, and his second year isn’t over. Chief of Staff John Kelly will leave in January. Borrowing an idea from Trump Tower, Trump has installed a revolving door. Consistent among the ejected/rejected/dejected Trump Teamsters is the view that Trump is difficult to work for or with. Ex-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson explained why: “It was challenging ... to work for a man who is pretty undisciplined, doesn’t like to read, doesn’t read briefing reports, doesn’t like to get into the details of a lot of things. ... I understand what you want to do (he would tell Trump) but you can’t do it that way. It violates the law.” The man who promised to bring the best and brightest with him has, instead, been showing them the door — with parting words befitting a president — calling them liars and even “dumb as a rock.” Trump himself has said he’d rather trust his gut “than anyone else’s brain.” Those who supervise people know that poor morale, lack of continuity and waste of resources result from frequent turnover of staff. Training new hires and bringing them up to speed is time-consuming and expensive. White House staff cannot be guided by gut from a coach who has contempt for the rules. It will take more than Mr. Clean and Pepto Bismol to clear Trump Swamp. Thankfully, “it’s Mueller time.” We’ll see what more he has brewing. JOHN DELANEY Port Townsend
