LETTER: Illegal immigrants impact legal aliens

There is consensus amongst economic scientists that illegal immigration puts downward pressure on wages. In other words, how can a young carpenter ask his employer for a raise when there are so many illegals waiting to take his job?

It is estimated that only 4 percent of illegal immigrants work in agriculture. Some reports conclude in most of the low-skilled or semi-skilled service sectors, between 25 and 38 percent of jobs are had by either legal migrant workers or illegal aliens. In construction, it’s estimated that 14 percent of all workers are illegal aliens.

Legal migrant workers and illegal immigrants are a part of our history and have contributed to the overall welfare of our communities.

I see no reason why we should not find a path to citizenship for those who qualify that does not involve separation from their families.

If illegal immigration continues as part of our future, it will continue to impact the ability of natives, legal migrant workers, recent legal immigrants and future legal immigrants to make a living. Illegal immigrants do respond to market forces in the same manner as legal workers.

When I listen to privileged politicians rushing to support illegal immigration through “sanctuary city” status, I think of climate change deniers and their ability to select only those facts that suit their individual needs.

Finally, there are probably 3 billion people on this planet who would in some way qualify, under economic or political hardship, for immigration. Is it really the best way to decide who comes here by attracting a foot race across the border in the middle of the night?

Illegal immigrants deserve respect and protection, but illegal immigration is ad hoc policy that abuses natives, legal immigrants and illegal immigrants alike.

Please do not support or attract illegal immigration.
