Chimacum schools’ future: A team effort

The Chimacum School Board held a public forum last May 13. Its purpose was to get public input from the taxpayers, parents and any interested parties.

There is much that is wrong with the district and some things right.

My purpose here is to express my dismay at the lack of attendance by those who really should have been there.

While the CHS auditorium should have been packed, it was not even close. In fact, the number in attendance was tiny in comparison to the number of people (parents) who should have been there.

If you plead ignorance to the forum, you were not paying attention, because every attempt was made at blanketing the community with notices and news articles.

If taxpayers are satisfied paying for substandard educations; parents are satisfied that their children may be doomed to flipping hamburgers as a career, and the administration leadership and staff are satisfied with “good enough,” then nothing can be done, and we all have failed our duties to our children. Sad indeed.

If you do care, then attend board meetings and hold the board’s and superintendents’ feet to the fire. Volunteer what time you can.

Most importantly, make sure your children know you care. This is a team effort. Get off the bench.
