LETTER: Advertising is not news; label it correctly

Posted

I was disturbed and disappointed to find, in Section C of the Leader of Feb. 22, five “articles” formatted in a style very similar to ones written by your staff, but carrying a small strip saying “paid advertising.”

In one case, the strip was placed at the bottom of the advertisement. This seems to me to be a clear attempt to pass off advertising as news. It is important to the trust placed by readers in the press that the sources and potential bias of content be clear and open.

Editor’s note: The Leader acknowledges that some of what appeared to be articles were, in fact, advertising. Although they were designed with a “paid advertising” logo in them, the advertisements should have been formatted differently to make that clearer. It was the first year for doing this section in this manner, and The Leader pledges to do a better job next time in making the distinction between news and advertising clear.
