Let’s take a timeout on public art criticism | Letter to the editor

Posted

This letter is  to share my thoughts on how special it is when an artist creates a work of art that uplifts us by its beauty.

We each have our own ideas of what is beauty but we also know how many times we have been changed by looking at a work of art that reflects on our environment and opens up a new window of looking at our world.

I support the way Kevin Mason has taken the damaged tree to re-create it with a new lovely sculpture to give it a new purpose.

When each of us takes time to share our own visions it’s a rare gift.

We need to support local artists as they each try to find new ways to give our town more opportunities to look and wonder and raise our imaginations. There is no right or wrong about art: it’s more about what speaks to us, raises our awareness.

It is my hope that we each can suspend criticism and be more positive about public art. In many ways, some of us do not get to museums and the art that is outside is another way to transform us as we make our journeys.
