Dear Editor:

The consultant team that was hired to make a recommendation to council proposed supporting a hybrid course and also acknowledged that the hybrid course designed by the golfing community was a strong favorite.

There was overwhelming support to keep the historic golf course intact, and the majority of those present recognized the locally produced hybrid plan was a true compromise that offered a sensible and cost-effective solution.

Council members took turns expressing their love or hate for the golf course and issued their individual perspectives on the proposals. Most demonstrated a dislike for both a central park and a hybrid approach, yet all acknowledged more work was to be done and that a consensus could not be met.

The locally produced hybrid plan had the support of Councilmen Thomas, who tried to push for a motion to explore this concept further. Despite large community support from golfers, and non-golfers this plan was shot down by council-driven by Mayor Faber – who on the day acted more like King Faber, stating that he would not support such a plan regardless of community support.

“It’s time to rip the Band-Aid off,” he said.

In a classic play of power, Faber asks the consultants to return with only one plan, and it must not have golf. Faber chose to use the words “silent majority,” suggesting that many people that didn’t come to speak on the day more than likely don’t support the golf course.

Faber indicated that he was not a golfer and wants golf eradicated from our town, despite our course being the oldest in the state. Faber stated that golf is a dying sport and isn’t part of the future. Yet, according to the PGA golf has had its largest growth period on record. What is really going on?
