Key City Public Theatre’s final weekend of Shakespeare in the Park brings a new play to the Chetzemoka Park stage: “Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea,” Julia Izumi’s take on “The Little Mermaid” with a twist.

It will run Friday through Sunday, Aug. 11 to Aug. 13, at 6 p.m.

Izumi’s play follows the story of a little rain cloud falling in love with a human, taking inspiration from “The Little Mermaid” and its author Hans Christian Andersen’s own real-life relationships.

“This show is as sincere as it is side-splitting, and unapologetic in its chaos; it overflows with all the big feelings we have about growing up, falling in love, and trying to fit into a world that seems like it hasn’t been made for us,” said director Kate Drummond.

Performer Emily Huntingford returns to her Port Townsend roots for this show. Local audiences may recognize her, as she has performed with Key City since 2008. Currently, she serves as artistic producer of Dacha Theatre, a Seattle-based company specializing in devised, immersive, and playful work.

Play-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, picnics, and warm clothes. Admission is pay-what-you-wish. Treats will be available for purchase.
