Justice Roberts needs to do his job | Letter to the editor

One week after the insurrection at the Capitol, President Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives. On Jan. 25, most Republican senators voted that because the Liar in Chief was now out of office the Senate didn’t have explicit Constitutional power to try a former president.

They opined that the Supreme Court Chief Roberts evidently agreed with them, because when Roberts was asked to preside at  the ex-president’s second impeachment trial by the new majority leader Schumer “He didn’t want to do it.”

Oh, slippery eels of fate! Can’t do it? Didn’t want to do it? Justice Roberts: Why couldn’t you have been plain? If you can, do it! Your presence as an impartial guardian of the rule of law would puncture the Republican senators doubtful constitutional argument.

We the People would deeply benefit from a trial perceived to be as nonpartisan as possible, thorough and fair, not a sordid farce.

Once on the bench, Roberts could do what judges do: Instruct jurors to buckle down, listen up, and focus on the evidence of the crime. And there’s lots of evidence.

Chief Justice do your duty! Your presence at the second impeachment trial that starts on Feb. 8 is hugely important.

As Greta Thunberg’s said about the refusal of world leaders to grapple with climate change: “You are failing us. The eyes of all future generations are upon you ... And if you choose to fail us, I say we will never forgive you.”

Senators, do your duty. Buckle down to consider the evidence, and find Trump guilty of threatening to destroy our Republic.

And people: Our duty is to contact Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts using the attached contact link to the Supreme Court, and encourage him to preside at the impeachment trial.
