Jefferson County Sheriff's Log | Been drinking? 'A little, but not drinking drinking'

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received 276 calls for service between Sept. 12 and Sept. 18. Below are some notable incidents.

At 7:33 p.m. Sept. 12, police were called to the area of Schwartz Road on Marrowstone Island about fireworks noise.

The caller said the noise had been going on for about an hour.

A deputy arrived in the area and sat for a time, they heard and saw nothing unusual.

At 6:41 p.m. Sept. 13, police were called about a custody dispute in Port Ludlow.

A man said his ex-partner, who he said should not be drinking while she has custody of their children, per a court order, was set  to take the kids on a trip to Kitsap County but appeared intoxicated.

Police ascertained there was no official order prohibiting the woman from drinking while she has custody of the children and her friend, not she, was driving that day, so there had been no criminal action.

At 2:56 p.m. Sept. 16, a caller informed police about alleged gunfire being heard near a hiking trail in Chimacum.

It was, the caller said, semi-automatic gunfire and very loud.

The area was not, according to police, a no-shoot zone, and no additional evidence of violence and vandalism was reported.

At 3:29 p.m. Sept. 17, police were called about a suspicious incident of alleged vandalism in Brinnon.

A woman told police a security light on her property had been destroyed, possibly “shot out,” and glass was strewn about on the ground below. She has had problems with trespassing at the address and is in an ongoing dispute with a neighbor.

A man was caught on security video near the light, and the woman claimed he was her neighbor and the most likely suspect.

However, the figure could not be identified in the video and it was not clear he damaged the light.

A report was filed.

At 6:33 p.m. Sept. 17, a Quilcene man reported several storage containers on his property had been broken into and a mountain bike and Old Town cedar canoe had been stolen.

The man told police the theft occurred sometime in the last month and he could not be more specific as he’d been away from the property. Likely, he said, judging by the fresh tire tracks on the scene, the crime had been committed in the last week.

A report was filed.

At 11:48 p.m. Sept. 17, an 18-year-old La Push man was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Sequim.

He was seen speeding on Highway 101 in the Gardiner area, police said, and was pulled over after he unsafely passed a large truck hauling wood chips.

The man had two passengers and only possessed a learner’s permit, not a true license. When asked, the driver said he was speeding because he really needed to use the bathroom.

Police advised he should simply pull over if the need was that immediate, but the man said he needed to defecate. Police pointed out he’d passed at least two portable toilets and asked if he’d been drinking. At first, the man said no, then admitted he “maybe” had “a little, but not drinking drinking.”

He was subjected to a field sobriety test and gave a breath sample which showed his BAC to be .035.

He was arrested and booked into the Jefferson County Jail.

His passengers arranged for someone to come get them and the car as well.

At 9:24 a.m. Sept. 18, a Port Hadlock resident called police to report a possible fraud.

They said they’d been receiving letters from California about the disposal of a trailer they did not own. When they contacted the phone number in the letters, they became suspicious.

Upon contacting California police, they were advised to make a local police report as well.

The investigation remains ongoing.

At 6:29 p.m. Sept. 18, police cited and released a 47-year-old man for driving with a suspended license in Nordland.

The man, of Nordland, was seen driving eastbound on Highway 116 near Milepost 4 when a check showed his license was suspended.

He was pulled over and his identity was confirmed; he also said he knew his license was suspended.

The man was cited and released.
