It’s audition time

Instrumentalists and singers in Jefferson County have many opportunities in the 2017-2018 season to join in song and music, practice technique and give back to the community in concert. The following organizations are currently holding auditions:

COMMUNITY CHORUS

The Community Chorus of Port Townsend and East Jefferson County begins rehearsals for its fall 2017 concert season on Sunday, Sept. 10. All singers ages 16 and older are invited, and no auditions are required. Tenor and bass voices are especially sought.

Tina Grewell returns to direct the chorus.

“It is a tremendous pleasure to be asked to direct our chorus again this upcoming fall,” Grewell said. “I’ve chosen a wide variety of music to satisfy the advanced singers and yet entice novice choristers, too.”

Chorus members are to prepare for two performances of a December holiday concert, “The Spirit of the Season,” featuring a range of music from an Aaron Copland classic to a “Grinch” medley.

Regular rehearsals are 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Sundays throughout the fall, at the parish hall at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1335 Blaine St., Port Townsend.

Registration is at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 10 and Sept. 17 prior to singing.

For information about registration and fees, contact Lynn Nowak, 360-385-1402, or go online to ptchorus.org.

Bonus rehearsals also are available for members beginning at 5:30 p.m. the second week of rehearsals.

Community Chorus holiday concerts are set for Friday, Dec. 1 at the First Presbyterian Church and Sunday, Dec. 3 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.

PORT TOWNSEND ORCHESTRA

Musicians of all ages and backgrounds are invited to join the Port Townsend Orchestra.

The orchestra is an all-volunteer orchestra that is now under the direction of Tigran Arakelyan, who was selected as the new artistic director/conductor following a search to replace longtime director Dewey Ehling, who died last year. Rehearsals, which began Tuesday, Sept. 5, are held weekly from 7 to 9 p.m. at Port Townsend High School. Musicians may join after the first week. Four concerts are scheduled for October, December, February and April.

PORT ANGELES SYMPHONY

Musicians are invited to audition for the Port Angeles Symphony, which is in its 85th season.

“We have openings especially for strings and percussion,” said conductor and music director Jonathan Pasternack. Auditions are by appointment. Contact Pasternack at 360-457-5579 or portangelessymphony@gmail.com. The 2017-2018 season includes two Pops & Picnic concerts in September, five main-stage symphony concerts and six chamber concerts.

Singers also have an opportunity to make music with the symphony. For more information, visit portangelessymphony.org.
