As I read the article about the patriotic folks who demonstrated on May 19, a few thoughts come to mind, in no particular order:
You are entitled to express your opinion. Of that there is no doubt. The spirit of Charles Darwin is watching over you as he makes out his 2020 awards list. Please note, however, that there is no magic switch to turn on that will restore your pre-pandemic reality. That is gone.
To those of you who feel that your Constitutional rights are being violated, or think the pandemic is mere “hype,” I would invite you to spend some time in Eastern Washington where meatpackers are having their Constitutional rights violated so you can eat burgers.
To those of you who feel inconvenienced by the fact that you can’t shop downtown or sail to the San Juan Islands, I would suggest that you are pretty lucky if that is your biggest concern at the moment. Please also be aware that as downtown businesses slowly re-open, most owners will exercise their Constitutional rights to refuse service to you if you choose not to wear a mask. End of story.
