HOT WEATHER IS NOT MY THING

I hear you get used to it but I know I never would.  I can’t, for the life of me, figure out how people go about their daily lives in places of the country (or world) that has HOT or even humid weather to contend with all the time.  I know many people love the heat, but I am not one of those. I don’t take it for granted that the Pacific Northwest has better weather than a lot of places, and while  I’ll put up with the high temps that come around for a short time in the summer, I’ll continue to complain about  it every time. I appreciate that the weather here on the peninsula is usually cooler than the metro area on the Seattle side of town.  Makes me all the more happy that I don’t live over there.

I’m sure my age has a lot to do with my attitude this week. I don’t recall ever commenting when I was a kid that I wished it would cool down. Course we could ride our bikes over to the railroad Y and jump in the bay in those days. Or run through the sprinkler or wear shorts.  I suppose I could still do the sprinkler thing but shorts are pretty much out of the question unless I stay in the house.

I guess I have a hard time sitting around doing nothing. Somewhere along the line I got it in my  head that I must always be busy – either cleaning or making something or going somewhere or being productive in one way or another.  It’s only 10:30 a.m. and already I’m thinking I need to take off my socks and sensible shoes to put on some lightweight sandals.  I did get a load of laundry washed and dried but I can tell that’s going to be the extent of my housework today.

I suspect heat bothers older folks more.  I went to bed at 9 last night and had to force myself up at 8 this morning, and I’m still feeling like a nap is needed.  I’ve got three fans going in two rooms and boy do I feel sorry for those folks across the street who have to show up and work on building their new homes every day.  They’re required to put in so many hours and you can tell some of those gals are way out of their comfort zone.

I spent a little energy this morning trying to locate a rattling in my walls.  At first I thought it was crows on the roof so I went outside to the front and back yard to see if they were up there.  I could only hear it while sitting on the toilet in my master bathroom.  I pounded the wall to see if it was mice running up and down.  They immediately answered my rapping with more tapping.  Oh dear!   As I thought about looking up the number for an exterminator, I wandered into my sewing room on the other side of the wall to see if I could hear them in there. As I stood for a few seconds, I realized my fan was rattling the Rhody and Rhody Run pins that I had attached to a large piece of poster board to display on the wall. Whew!  That’s a relief.
