The Jefferson County Historical Society and the North Olympic History Center are offering a series of “history hikes” in the coming months.
History buffs and hikers can join David Brownell, executive director of the North Olympic History Center, for a guided hike around significant sites across east Jefferson County. Participants will explore evidence of the many layers of this region’s history, from S’Klallam and Chemakum Tribe sites to the Irondale steel plant to U.S. military installations.
The first history hike is Saturday, May 21, with a trek around the Qatáy (Kah Tai) prairie and lagoon in
Port Townsend.
Hikes will be offered at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and last around 90 minutes each.
To join, tickets can be purchased at www.simpletix.com/e/history-hikes-guided-hikes-at-historically-tickets-102733 and cost $45 each for members of the Jefferson County Historical Society or North Olympic History Center, and $60 for non-members.
Three other history hikes are planned in the coming months: June 18 at Fort Flagler Historical State Park; Sept. 18 on Indian Island; and Oct. 22 at Irondale Beach County Park.
Hike participants will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the hike site. The distance and terrain for each hike will vary.
Hiking groups are limited to up to
12 participants.
