Grand opening for youth-focused community coffee house

The youth finally have a place to call home in Port Townsend.

The Nest, a community coffee house focused on hiring and serving youth and young adults, will have its grand opening celebration from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20.

The event will include free samples of some of the beverages they’ll be offering before moving into their full service until 7:30 p.m.

Local nonprofit OWL360, who also operate the Pfeiffer House in Uptown, put the project together with the help of their Youth and Young Adults Advisory Council (YYAAC). The YYAAC is made up of Jefferson County residents ranging in age from 14 to 26.

“Our hope for this space is basically just to hold space for youth and young adults,” said Emily Abell, who at 26 is the eldest member of the YYAAC. She also works for Olympic Community Action Programs as a certified peer councilor and is a resident advisor at Pfeiffer House.

“Space for youth to come and hang out, do homework, socialize, get services. A lot of providers are going to be meeting out of here,” she added.

Groups such as OlyCAP, Jefferson County Public Health, and a myriad of other nonprofits are planning to host events and use the private rooms within the space to meet with clients.

West Lake, 21, has lived in Port Townsend his whole life and hopes his work with the council creates a place for young people to feel at home.

“There’s the rec center — but it just seems more cozy in here; it seems warm and safe. That’s what I really like about it,” Lake said. “I hope other people can get the same energy from this place that I do.”

The Nest is located at 1119 Lawrence Street in Port Townsend and plans to be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays and until 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, with the possibility of expanding hours down the line.
