The 24th annual Aldrich’s Gingerbread Contest is moving downtown this year to Flagship Landing at 1007 Water St.
The Port Townsend Main Street Program offered to host the contest for this year, while Aldrich’s Market was in business transition. The public is invited to drop off entries, along with their entry forms, from Dec. 16-30.
In December 2017, the gingerbread contest is scheduled to go back home to Aldrich’s in Uptown Port Townsend, according to a press release.
“Our theme for the December holidays is ‘Look Here First for Family Fun and Holiday Memories,'” said Mari Mullen, PT Main Street Program executive director. “The gingerbread contest is a perfect example of this because it is a favorite tradition among many Port Townsend families.
“In the past, entries have ranged from Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole, to the Jefferson County Courthouse and the downtown ferry.”
The Gingerbread display is on public view for a month during business hours in the retail space across from Whistle Stop Toys in Flagship Landing. Also of interest at this time of year – Whistle Stop Toys has a Santa mailbox outside its door, Mullen said.
ENTRY INFORMATION
There are three categories: child 12 and under; children’s group 12 and under; over 12, individual or group.
Please provide a name for each gingerbread project. No political themes. Return entry forms with “entry fee” of one can of food for the food bank. Secure entry form to the gingerbread entry.
Although gingerbread needs to be the basis for the “houses,” inedible decorations are permitted and encouraged. Extra credit is given for use of traditional gingerbread as opposed to gingerbread crackers.
Entry footprint is limited to a floor of 18 x 24. Entries can be any height.
Prizes include gift certificates to Elevated Ice Cream and Candy Company, Whistle Stop Toys and the Rose Theatre.
Gingerbread creations are to be on display 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Dec. 16 through Jan. 14. Judging takes place Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. Displays must be picked up by Jan. 14.
