An Irondale house that was in the process of being sold sustained $5,000-$10,000 damage after fire broke out in a bedroom shortly before 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 2. No one was home, and there were no injuries.

East Jefferson Fire Rescue was dispatched to W. Swaney Street after a passerby saw smoke coming from the eaves and called 911.

Arriving firefighters saw smoke coming from under the roofline and initiated a transitional attack, said East Jefferson Fire Rescue public information officer Bill Beezley. The fire was out at 10:29 a.m.

“The official cause was combustible material stacked too close to an electric heater,” said Beezley. He said firefighters found a stack of engineered hardwood planks leaning against a baseboard heater.

Beezley said the property owner also told authorities that he had asked Jefferson County Public Utility District to turn off the power to the house, so there is a question of why the power was on. Someone appraising the house also had been there a day earlier so that person also was to be questioned in the case.
