The annual Jefferson County Fair is nothing if not fun for kids. From hat-making to the Greatest Kids Show on Dirt, coloring contests and watching huge draft horses haul heavy loads in a race against time, there’s something for everyone. For the youngest, such events are often about exploring, and for that, there are coloring contests and crafts, reptile bingo, the opportunity to catch a (fake) snake, the Fair Facts Game, button collecting at various booths and guessing games. For those a tad older, it becomes all about watching: bull riding — or trying it out on a mechanical bull — 4-H animal competition, the lawnmower football game and demolition derby or a hands-on visit to creatures at Reptile Isle. The next older group includes 200 youth enrolled in 4-H, who will show off their pets, livestock, sewing and cooking talents, among many other skills they’ve honed over the past year. LEGOs robot demonstrations will be held, and entrants will showcase everything from afghans to marionberry pie. A Horse Pie-Eating contest is slated, as are watercolors and bat house-building classes. There will be a coconut sack race, juggling and “tug-a-vine.” Rides will also be available at the northwest corner of the venue. Kids will also enjoy the special events in the Main Stage and Horse Arena, where fast-paced barrel racing, mud drags and breakaway and team roping take over Sunday.
