Wood chips caught on fire at the Port Townsend Paper Corp. around 5:30 p.m. Oct. 24.

After hours of combating the stubborn fire, the paper mill requested assistance from the fire department at 5:30 p.m., according to East Jefferson Fire Rescue.

The fire, which was caused by spontaneous combustion, was located in a wood chip pile estimated to be 30 feet high and 100 feet across, according to EJFR spokesman Bill Beezley.

Mill personnel used loaders to scoop up burning chips and relocate them to an open area where fire department personnel saturated them with water.

EJFR remained on scene until 8:59 p.m. when they terminated command and returned control to mill employees.
