Just as the Port Townsend Marine Science Center is inviting the community to take part in its “Earth Day” beach and roadside cleanups on Saturday, April 20, so too is the Port Townsend Main Street Program scheduling a “spring cleanup” for that same day, from 9 a.m. to noon, to sweep sidewalks, wash windows and tackle planting projects.

The Port Townsend Main Street Program plans to devote “Earth Day” to caring for the city’s parks and pockets of nature, with work parties slated to conduct weeding and planting, with a special focus on the downtown rain gardens.

Prospective volunteers are asked to bring their own hand tools and gloves, and wear work clothes, after relaying an RSVP in advance to the Main Street office, either by phone at 360-385-7911, or via email at admin@ptmainstreet.org.

The Port Townsend Main Street Program is also requesting that merchants in the historic districts give special attention to their storefronts, by washing their windows, removing sidewalk litter and “spiffing up” their storefronts, to which end the Main Street Program is taking orders for flower baskets, as well as to participate in the flower basket maintenance program.

Those interested in signing up their businesses are again asked to email admin@ptmainstreet.org, and are advised that the hanging flower baskets program runs from mid-May through the end of September.

Additional Port Townsend Main Street beautification and maintenance projects include the maintenance of the rain garden, the year-round maintenance of Adams Street Park, the Tyler Street Plaza plantings and “portolettes,” and streetscape design-related projects.
