Don’s Pharmacy has been sold. It has been a vibrant part of our community now for 60 years.

We owe many thanks to Don and the Hoglund family for their years of excellent pharmacy service. Shopping, getting your prescriptions refilled and getting a snack at the same time has been a huge part of what we love about our small town. We always took visitors to the “soda fountain” for a burger and shake. Usually, they also did shopping while in the store.

Unfortunately, I have heard that the new owner owns two other pharmacies and plans to eliminate the fountain to enlarge the pharmacy. We will now be part of his small chain and probably not have a consistent person as our pharmacist.

I know many people went to Don’s to have someone local and constant who could help them monitor their medications. I know that privately owned pharmacies have a harder time making a profit than the big chains.

The soda fountain was probably not a huge money maker for the store, but I loved it. I went there several times a week, always for my ice cream and loved seeing the employees. I hate that this is going to happen. It feels like we are losing part of our community and Port Townsend is just becoming another “cookie cutter” little town where money is more important than the people of the community. What will we be if we have nothing special about our town left?

Agree. If the fountain goes away, we lose a lot more than a place to eat.

So sad! Please new pharmacy owner, keep the fountain and advertise it! It could bea real asset for your store.

If the soda fountain goes away, so will I. Best banana split in the world and the funniest friendliest waitresses in the world. I agree with Sheila, keep it and advertise it. I like elevated and Nifty's just fine, but they can't hold a candle to the banana split at Don's

I can't agree more, Nick Krehnke!

The GD liberals moving into Port Townsend & taking away our soda fountains!! Where the H else am I gonna get enough ice cream to slip into my midday diabetic coma? First the lberals take the soda fountains, then our churches, then the whole GD town ends up in like another CHOP!!! Needles, piss & unclaimed children everywhere!!!!!!!

I can't help but notice 4 comments for ice cream and Don's. We all love Don's. I can't help but notice only my comment on the Robert Gray letter regarding public input and the FWPDA fiasco at Fort Worden.

The take away for me is that we may have reached the point where "the public" no longer needs to be considered if they have enough ice cream, or can be threatened with the loss if it.

Not only is this sad but it seems like another profit over people. It appears that that those who come into our small community always ignore the soul of the town and the folks that live here. That's what makes a small community like ours unique. Good luck to the new owners I won't be back.
