Port Townsend City Council votes to form salary commission

Posted

With a unanimous vote Monday, the Port Townsend City Council agreed to establish a commission to re-evaluate councilmember salaries.

Once a recommendation is made by the council, the city will be bound to the determination from the body.

After the commission has been formed, it will have a 120-day review period to determine whether those who serve on the council should be paid more than the current $500 per month ($750 for those serving as mayor) or less.

If the commission decides to increase council’s salary, the bump would take effect for all councilmembers regardless of their term of office.

Decreases to councilmember salaries, however, would start during the next term for incumbent and incoming councilmembers.

A referendum may be pursued by the public if one is filed within 30 days of the filing of a new salary schedule by the commission.

If filed, a referendum would halt salary changes for councilmembers until approved by a public vote.
