Coronavirus outbreak at Washington meat processing plant

Posted

According to Walla Walla County officials, early testing results from a beef processing facility outside of Wallula show 15% of workers have tested positive for COVID-19.

More than 1,200 workers have been tested, and so far, 181 cases have been confirmed with one death.

The plant is the largest beef processor in the state, and county officials said the plant can reopen as soon as there are enough cleared workers to resume operations.

This comes as meat industry officials across the country warn the COVID-19 pandemic could cause large-scale disruptions to the food supply chain nationwide.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week to harness the power of the federal Defense Production Act to list food processors as critical infrastructure and directing the secretary of agriculture to “take all appropriate action” to keep plants operating.
