Plans are underway to construct the first-ever accessible and inclusive playground to be built in Jefferson County.
The Jefferson Universal Movement Playground — or JUMP — nonprofit is moving forward with plans to build the playground at HJ Carroll Park in Port Hadlock.
The space will provide a variety of motor and multi-sensory experiences for children of differing ages and abilities. All-accessible surfacing will allow parents, friends, grandparents, or other caregivers that use assistive mobility devices such as walkers, canes, and wheelchairs a place to roll or safely walk to and watch their children play.
The $1.4 million playground will be set up adjacent to the basketball courts at HJ Carroll Park.
Construction on the project is expected to break ground in the middle of May and wrap up in mid-September.
Around $270,000 was donated to JUMP by the Jefferson County Works Mike Berry Memorial Children’s Fund. According to the nonprofit, organizers have already almost reached full funding for the playground to be built.
JUMP was formed in 2016 in order to provide children with disabilities the chance to enjoy a playground that they can safely access and enjoy. The nonprofit consists of pediatric physical therapists, parents, and other community members from around the county. In 2017, the organization joined the Mike Berry Memorial Children’s Fund, which became the fiscal sponsor of the group.
Before installing playground features at HJ Carroll Park, a safety perimeter fence will be installed to encompass the basketball court, horseshoe pit section, labyrinth, and a portion of the undeveloped property north and east of the basketball courts. The court will be closed throughout the project, but the BMX bike track and disc golf course at the park will remain open.
The perimeter path near the basketball court will remain open as well, except for when the construction crew will need to temporarily close it for safety.
The main parking lot will remain open except when dump trucks and other heavy equipment cross through it. Additional parking is always available along the park roads and in the grass overflow parking area of the park.
