Fares for travelers on Washington state ferries will rise by 2.5 percent this year and next.
The Washington State Transportation Commission approved an across-the-board ferry fare increase during its meeting last week.
The new ferry rates include both passenger and vehicle fares. The 2.5 percent increase in fares will take place in October and again in October 2022.
According to the commission, the fare increase will help the ferry system meet revenue requirements that were passed by the Legislature earlier this year.
The current state transportation budget requires $377 million to be generated from fares over the two-year budget timeframe, which the commission said translated into a need for an additional $9.2 million in fare revenues.
