Chorus begins rehearsals for spring program

The Community Chorus of Port Townsend and East Jefferson County starts preparations for April concerts on Sunday, Jan. 14, when singers launch their spring rehearsal season at Grace Lutheran Church, 1120 Walker St., in Port Townsend.

Spring director Jon Stafford has planned a program that includes Robert Ray’s “Gospel Mass,” plus a selection of folk and popular tunes.

Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 14 with singing commencing at 6:30. Rehearsals continue on subsequent Sundays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a second registration night beginning at 6 p.m., on Sunday, Jan. 21. Registration fee is $35.

Concerts are slated for April 12 and 14.

All singers age 16 and older are welcome and no auditions are required. Men are particularly encouraged to sign up. Experienced choral singers and novices alike are all invited. Those who are interested may download and print a registration form on the chorus website, ptchorus.org.

The Community Chorus was founded in 1975. Part of its mission is to help singers return to singing if they haven’t sung in years. Many types of support are offered, including optional bonus rehearsals, vocal skills aid, and sound files to assist in learning the music for those who need them.

Another goal is education. The chorus offers scholarships to promising college students and high school seniors who are continuing their studies of vocal music at the college and university level.

Chorus President Linda Atkins extends an invitation to new and returning members. “Come and sing with us!” she said.
