When it comes to getting sweets for your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day, the staff at Elevated Ice Cream and Candy Shop stand ready to offer advice and merchandise.
“Of course, heart-shaped boxes of chocolates are the iconic Valentine’s gift,” said Julie McCulloch, owner of Elevated. “We also sell them with soft centers for those who prefer them not chewy.”
McCulloch reported other popular selections for Valentine’s include salted caramels, in milk and dark chocolate, as well as heart-shaped sweets for children.
“We must sell close to 60 pounds of petite sour hearts each Valentine’s season,” McCulloch said. “Pink and red chocolate rocks, and cinnamon and raspberry hearts, are also in demand.”
For those who might not be sure what to get their sweetheart, Stephanie Redmond, manager of the candy shop, recommends shoppers ask themselves a few questions.
“What age are you buying for?” Redmond said. “Is this an adult or a child? A man or a woman? Do they like chocolates, or do they prefer other sweets? If they like chocolate, do they prefer dark or milk?”
And if you can’t nail all of those down, Redmond recommended an assortment box, either 15 or 30 pieces.
“You get the same selection in each box, and you can get it with or without a heart-shaped box,” Redmond said. “We also carry a wide variety of chocolate bars year-round, so if you know your sweetheart’s favorite, that’s another good choice. And pastel chocolate cherries are another one that’s a great gift year-round, regardless of the occasion.”
For those less fond of chocolates, Elevated carries 24 flavors of Jelly Belly jelly beans, and to accompany their edible treats, shoppers can add a small plush toy.
“Those mostly tend to be ordered by parents or grandparents for their kids,” Redmond said. “Although a lot of husbands get their wives teddy bears to go with their chocolates and candies. In Port Townsend, plush pugs are especially popular.”
McCulloch said classically minded shoppers can combine their Valentine’s Day with a late observance of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birthday — Jan. 27, 1756 — with Mozartkugel chocolate-covered marzipan treats.
And on the ice cream side of the house, McCulloch invited Valentine’s Day couples to share “traditional old-fashioned American ice cream sodas” together at Elevated.
“You can share them on a double date,” said McCulloch, who noted Elevated has six flavors of syrup — vanilla, chocolate, coffee, raspberry, marionberry and strawberry — to mix with ice cream and soda water. “After pre-made sodas started being sold in the U.S., fountain sodas started going out of fashion, but we still serve them.”
