Chimacum School District hosts wellness event

A former Olympic medalist will give the keynote speech at a wellness event next week for all Chimacum School District staff, focused on supporting the dedicated adults who assist the students.

Partnering with the Community Wellness Project and Jefferson County, the event will be held at Chimacum Elementary and Junior-Senior High School and is planned for 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31.

Water polo athlete Jaime Komer will give a talk to inspire wellness and planning, followed by a wellness fair where staff can visit with a variety of local practitioners, from acupuncturists to Qui Gong experts to nutritionists to yogis.

Local caterer Grace Love will prepare a Chimacum Valley-centered lunch, so food services staff can also fully participate.

Staff wellness is a priority for the Chimacum School District. Chimacum Schools endeavor to provide support for every staff member to develop healthy habits for better physical and mental health, including exercise, nutrition, mental and emotional well-being, and/or mindfulness. The schools strive to support staff to experience joy and fulfillment in their work, and to thrive in all aspects of their lives.

Fostering the physical and mental health of school employees helps to support students’ health and academic success. The CDC recently released school staff wellness strategies, illustrating the national importance of this effort (for details, visit www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/employee_wellness.htm).

Based on feedback from this event, additional voluntary staff wellness activities will be planned for throughout the school year.
