Emily Thompson
"Chimacum" is one of four finalists for the name of the new Washington State Ferries 144-car vessel, along with Sammamish, Cowlitz and Suquamish.
The approved submission was made by Emily (Russell) Thompson, a 1985 graduate of Chimacum High School who now lives in Seattle.
"I feel this little-known Native American tribe deserves more recognition," said Thompson, daughter of Chuck and Karen Russell of Marrowstone Island. "Doing research for this submission was fascinating for me and I wish there was more documentation available. I also have very fond memories of my alma mater. My two brothers and I all graduated from the Chimacum school system."
Thompson said it was also important to her to demonstrate the process to her children, including research, letter-writing, gathering letters of support and combining it all into a single pdf for submission.
Thompson's submission was supported with letters from nine local individuals and organizations, including schools, government officials, tribal, church and civic club leaders.
WSF and the Executive Council of the Ferry Advisory Committee are taking public comment during the month of October.
Any members of Voice of Washington State (VOWS) or Ferry Riders Opinion Group (FROG) would be eligible to vote through those panels during the month of October. Letters of support can be sent to the Ferry Advisory Executive Committee at:

The recommendation for the final name is expected from the committee at their 1 p.m., Nov. 19 meeting at Lakewood City Hall, 6000 Main Street SW, Lakewood. The full Commission is expected to take action at that time.

Two other recent ferry names have come directly from nominations out of Jefferson County: The 64-car ferry Chetzemoka, and the name Kwa-di Tabil for the class of 64-car boats.
