Twenty singers ages 4-14 perform an eclectic selection of tunes at the Port Townsend Public Library Children’s Choir concert this Saturday, May 13.
The concert, under the direction of Phina Pipia, is set for 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 1202 Lawrence St., next to the library in the Uptown District.
“You will be wowed and inspired,” said Pipia. “This group of spirited singers has that special magic that will enchant audiences of all ages.”
The program includes pieces by opera composer Georges Bizet, pop star Meghan Trainor, rock band Rush, folk singer Jonathan Richman, poet Moondog and musical genius David Bowie.
“My goal was to introduce these singers to music that would truly inspire them,” said Pipia, who revived the choir in 2015 and is now in her second season as its director.
“Of course, the best part is that the kids have introduced me to a ton of new tunes, and I’m in turn getting to learn their favorite genres, styles and artists.”
The young musicians have been rehearsing for the past 10 weeks in preparation for the performance. Pipia said the kids have been incredibly enthusiastic at rehearsals, even making stylistic suggestions for each piece. “I couldn’t have imagined a cooler group,” she said.
“My favorite day of the week has been driving three girls to choir practice, singing full out, songs from my childhood,” said choir parent, Tami Hunter.
The Library Children’s Choir is a Port Townsend tradition, founded by Dahti Blanchard in the early 1990s. The program is made possible by the Friends of the Port Townsend Library. The concert is accompanied by pianist Jennifer Pipia.
