‘Central Park’ on golf course estimated at $5.25 million

Remaking the city golf course into a “Central Park” for Port Townsend is expected to cost $5.25 million, according to a preliminary estimate prepared by city consultants.

Port Townsend has been pondering the future of the city-owned links since 2020.

Last September, the city hired the landscape architect firm of Groundswell to help explore potential uses for the Port Townsend Golf Course and Mountain View Commons.

The city has launched two online surveys to get input, and the third — and last — open house to talk about the future of the Port Townsend Golf Course and Mountain View Commons will be held Thursday in the Fort Worden Commons.

Conceptual plans that have been considered include a restored golf course, a hybrid golf course, a Central Park-style development, and a “space for nature” approach.

According to a presentation prepared by Groundswell, restoring the golf course is estimated to cost $1.3 million over 10 years.

A hybrid golf course, which would include public trails, a community garden, nature play area, relocated dog park, boardwalk, and city plaza with pickleball area and “splashpad,” would cost $4.4 million over 11 years.

The “space for nature” option would also include trails, a nature play area, dog park, habitat restoration and other attractions, is estimated to cost $4.62 million over 22 years.

The Central Park concept also includes amenities, such as an amphitheater, community gathering space, and boardwalk.

All of the concepts include an area set aside for housing.

Consultants have said funding most of the options could be done by grant requests over a number of years, to fit with phasing development of the golf course.

The open house will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 22 at the Fort Worden Commons, 210 Battery Way.

Organizers of the open house said officials will summarize the public input that’s been received so far, as well as share the final two design concepts in the planning effort.

There will also be a discussion about priorities and next steps.

An online version of the open house will be held from
4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 26.
