Celebrate and eat in Port Ludlow

Time to saddle up, buckaroos.

Don and Lynne Folsom are moving to Colorado, and we need to celebrate. Not because they are leaving, of course, but we want to show them some appreciation for all they have contributed to the Port Ludlow community in the time they have been here. They joined Milt and Doris Lum to co-chair what may be the best monthly community get-together there is in any community.

Share a meal and enjoy a program that is educational, entertaining and sometimes nap-inducing. (Hey, sometimes there is the deadly combination of advancing age and wine.)

There was plenty to eat at the Yacht Club’s Seafood Feast a week ago: halibut, salmon, venison stew, clam chowder, shrimp salad, scallops, crab and rock fish, all prepared by Tish and Tom Satre. Then, since it was such a light meal, we added a big piece of cheesecake with some whipped cream. It was a big, happy crowd since many of them had just received a dozen of those pretty Rotary roses, as well as a tummy full of the best that Alaskan waters can provide.

The Port Ludlow Performing Arts hit another home run last weekend with a two-concert return engagement by Loren and Mark with their unique musical chemistry on a pair of acoustic guitars. These two men must have spent thousands of hours playing together and perfecting their performance. Their complex presentation of bluegrass, jazz and country was a joy to experience. BJ and I went to the Sunday-afternoon concert and even though we were tired, we could not get a nap in.

The Memorial Day Celebration and Flag Retirement Ceremony is back on the schedule this year. This community event is always moving for attendees as well as an opportunity to dedicate the destruction of your old and worn-out U.S. flags. It will start at 11 a.m. at the Bay Club on Monday, May 28. You can drop off your flag ahead of time with the dedication you would like to be read at the Bay Club. It will be a nice way to remember the meaning of Memorial Day for all of us.

The snow bunnies are mostly back from California or Arizona or New Mexico or Texas or even Florida, so the pickleball courts are full again, and there are more folks sporting those healthy-looking suntans instead of a pasty white glow on the rest of us. It is good have the town full again. Sonja of the Bayside Barbershop is also back in town having been to Palm Desert for 10 days. It is a good thing she came back because she needs to pay the bar bill and I needed a haircut!

The advice this week from Ulrike Ruffert may be better than we deserve or are able to follow. “Patience is the ability to put up with people you would rather put down.” However, Bob Goddard advises, “To err is human, but it is even more human when you blame someone else.”

Love a curmudgeon and have a great week.
