British rocker Albert Lee and his band are coming to the Palindrome with special guest John “Greyhound” Maxwell at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday,    July 19. 

Lee started out during the emerging rock-and-roll scene of 1960s London.

Over his long and multifaceted career, Lee has worked with artists such as Willie Nelson, the Everly Brothers, Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris, and the Crickets. 

After moving to the United States and assimilating into the country music scene, Lee quickly garnered a reputation as one of the fastest and most technically proficient guitar players in the business, known for his fingerstyle and hybrid picking technique. 

He won Guitar Player magazine’s “Best Country Guitarist” award five years in a row.

Lee has recorded a number of solo albums, and won a Grammy for his contribution to the 2001 Earl Scruggs version of “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.” 

Maxwell is one of Port Townsend’s preeminent blues artists. His musical education began as a teenager after seeing B.B. King play a set in Chicago. He took lessons from Johnny Long at the Old Town School of Folk Music. 

When Maxwell left for college in    St. Louis, he fronted a blues trio. From there, he traveled the country and played bluegrass in Tulsa and punk-rock in Hollywood, with forays into jazz, folk, and rock-and-roll. 

But no matter the genre, Maxwell always found himself coming back to the blues. 

His recording, “Blues for Evangeline,” made the top five in the “Best Self-Produced CD” competition at the 2016 Memphis International Blues Challenge. 

In 2017, a song of his was featured in a Sundance film. That same year, he also taught at the Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival. 

He was the 2018 Washington State Blues Society award recipient for “Best Acoustic Blues Guitar.” 

Lately Maxwell has been opening for artists such as Marcia Ball, Albert Cummings, Keb’Mo, Taj Mahal, and now, Lee.
