Posted

Port Townsend listeners are set to be blessed with the piano talents of the three-time Grammy nominated Jovino Santos Neto, the guest performer with the Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra in its upcoming concert.

Set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26 in the Chimacum Junior/High School Auditorium, the symphony orchestra — accompanied by Santos Neto on piano — will perform musical pieces with ties to the Puget Sound region. The group will play Port Townsend-based composer Karl F. Bach’s Petite Suite for Orchestra, Symphony No. 2 “Mysterious Mountain” by Seattle resident Alan Hovhaness, and Santos Neto’s “Milonga de Emilia,” with the Brazilian performing the piano solo on his piece.

Santos Neto is a master pianist, composer, and arranger and is one of the most important Brazilian musicians working today. Currently based in Seattle, he has performed across the globe, showcasing his piano proficiency and top-tier talent for composing.

Santos Neto taught at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle for 26 years, and performs with his groups, Quineto and Trio. He was inducted into the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame in 2012. His compositions have been played by the Seattle Symphony; Hamburg, Germany’s NDR Bigband; and the Swiss Jazz Orchestra.

For the local performance, Santos Neto will display his dexterous ability on the black and whites during “Milonga de Emilia.”

A precursor to the tango, the Milonga originated in the Rio do Sul region of southern Brazil and northern Argentina. This work was premiered in 2018 by the Den Jyskke Musikkonservatorium Symphony Orchestra, located in Aarus, Denmark.

Port Townsend’s Bach was a member of the local symphony orchestra for 13 years as well as being conductor for the Port Townsend Summer Band for 17 years. Bach’s Petite Suite for Orchestra was premiered in 2003 by the symphony orchestra.

The concert is free to attend, though donations are always gratefully accepted, and interested attendees can learn more about the group at ptsymphony.org.

The symphony orchestra will have an open dress rehearsal at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, offering attendees a look in on the skillful group of players.
