I attended the Jefferson County Fair Board meeting on Feb. 9 because I believe in the vision that former manager Danny McEnerney put forth for a year-round facility providing family-oriented activities. It is something our community, and especially our youth, badly need. If this is not implemented, I fear the golf course discussions taking place now will repeat concerning the best use of the fairgrounds.
A number of community members that I respect, who give generously of their time to the community, spoke out and relayed concerns at the meeting. The fair board was also accused of neglect of duty, with specific allegations not being relayed.
Many volunteer-run organizations have operational deficits, and this would not surprise me. But an observer was left with the impression that there may have been malfeasance on the part of the board of trustees.
I do not know most of the trustees, but I do know one fairly well. In my experience, Rita Hubbard is a woman of the utmost integrity who gives her time tirelessly to the community in many different ways.
I urge people not to jump to conclusions about the issues at hand. I believe that most on both sides of the issue (how sad that there are sides!) have the same goal of bettering the usage of the fairgrounds for our community.
