Boling powers Rangers to win

A big dis led to some serious swish.

Give much of the credit to the Quilcene Rangers’ Big Fella.

Taylor Boling scored a career-high 26 points in leading Quilcene past Northwest Christian School during a come-from-behind victory in boys varsity basketball.

The Rangers beat the Wolverines 63-56 in the Senior Night matchup in Quilcene late last week.

Boling led all scorers with 26 points — an all-time high for the Ranger forward — going four-for-four from the free-throw line and hoisting his fellow Rangers on his shoulders in the fateful fourth.

For Boling, it was personal. He recalled Northwest Christian passing over Al Ware in the school’s search for a new coach.

Ware found a new home in Quilcene instead.

Boling said few people knew that backstory going into the Rangers’ last home game of the regular season.

“Everybody else didn’t know about it, but I knew it from Week Two,” Boling said.

“They’ve been on my calendar since Week Two. I wanted to put it to them,” he added.

The game was tight before the Wolverines built on its halftime lead in the second half.

The game was tied 12-12 at the close of the first quarter, and the Rangers trailed by one going into halftime, 26-25.

But the Wolverines outscored the Rangers 17-12 in the third, with senior Levi Mavaega tickling the twine for a team-high eight points in the quarter.

Quilcene trailed 43-37 going into the final stanza, but Boling boiled over in the fourth.

The Big Fella scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, including a made basket on a foul sealed with a successful point-after.

“The Big Fella finally brought us home,” Ware said of Boling. “He finally brought us home.”

With the Rangers gathered for Senior Night, the team’s 12th-graders were in the spotlight Thursday: Isaiah Reimann and James Miller.

Reimann contributed nine points, with a key three-pointer in the fourth.

Miller scored 14 points, including two three-pointers.

“My seniors, I told them in the second they’re not coming out. They earned this spot, they earned this. So, they’re going to play,” Ware recalled. “But I told them I needed intensity from them.”

The coach got it, and from up and down the roster.

Andrew Perez-Lopez finished with 10 points for the Rangers. Walter Beck sank a clutch free throw in the fourth quarter.

And freshman forward Oliver Hopkins added three points in the first quarter.

The Wolverines were led by Musie Dunning, who knocked down 17 points — nine in the second half. Mavaega finished with 14.

Ware said the Rangers came into the contest with the same mindset they’ve had all season.

“We are not going to stop playing,” he said.

“I switched my lineup midway through the season. And Taylor, like I told him, I want you fresh for the fourth quarter,” Ware said of Boling.

“Tonight, he finally saw what I was talking about. He had fresh legs, he was ready to go, and he brought us home,” Ware added.
