The Jefferson County Board of Health will discuss racism as a public health crisis at a virtual meeting at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18.
On Facebook, Jefferson County Health has issued a statement recognizing the role the health department plays in this issue: “2020 has been a challenging and illuminating year in the world of public health. The tragedies of this year have shed much-needed light on the reality of systemic racism and its longstanding impacts on health equity. As public health representatives for Jefferson County, we recognize there is a role for us in moving from conversation to action, and we are proud to support the Black community as we all work toward lasting solutions. Black lives matter.”
On the June 18 agenda, “Racism as a public health crisis” is listed under “New Business.”
The Board of Health will also discuss the county’s move from Phase 2 to Phase 3 of the state’s “Safe Start” reopening plan.
