4/23 - INTO THE WEST (1992)
Grandpa finds a horse and gives it to his grandchildren. When their dad falls on hard times, they must veer from their Roma life and move into a tenement apartment in Dublin. After the horse is stolen outside of their apartment, the two young lads set out to find it and then flee with it "into the west" where, according to Hollywood movies, that's where happy futures lie. "Into the West" stars Gabriel Byrne & Ellen Barkin.
4/30 - AFTER LIFE (1998) - Japan (subtitled)
In this highly acclaimed film, Director Hirokazu Koreeda tells the story of a group of people who have recently died and find themselves in a limbo realm resembling a relatively mundane building. Counselors are on hand to help new arrivals pick one memory from their lives to take with them into eternity. Once the memories are chosen, the staff make a short film representing each one, with the films making up a collage of some of the most thoughtful cinematic moments in film history.
5/7 - TRULY MADLY DEEPLY (1990)
A woman dealing with inconsolable grief over the loss of her partner gets another chance when he returns to earth as a ghost. Thanks in large part to stars Juliet Stevenson & Alan Rickman, director Anthony Minghella's "TRULY MADLY DEEPLY" is a romance with infectious spirit.
5/14 - THE SEVENTH SEAL (1957) - Sweden (subtitled)
Ingmar Bergman's masterpiece starring Max Von Sydow is set during the Black Plague. The film tells the story of a knight returning to Sweden from the Crusades seeking answers about life, death, and the existence of God as he plays chess against the Grim Reaper.
5/21 - THE GHOST AND MRS MUIR (1947)
Set around 1900, a young widow defies convention when she and her young daughter take off to a secluded seaside cottage—a cottage which happens to be the abode of one ghostly sea captain. A woman alone, with very little money and the responsibility of a daughter must find her way in dealing with the fractious spirit while finding her way in life. Starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison, and directed by Joseph Mankiewicz, the U.K. Times called it "a film that effortlessly switches between gentle romantic comedy and pathos, melodrama, and fantasy. It’s a beguiling charmer."
